20 Ways to Find a Job!

20 Ways to Find a Job!

A few weeks back I put out a video looking to help those in need of job search ideas. The goal was to create a small playbook of suggestions and steps to take when looking for a new opportunity. Too often job seekers find themselves stuck, not know what to do. In the spirit of paying it forward I am sharing 20 Ways to Find a Job. Thank you to those who shared their thoughts. I hope this list helps.

  1. Approach all avenues with humility, people want to help!

  2. Build multiple versions of your resume for various uses e.g., Full Bio, Executive Summary, and a traditional bulleted version. There is no rule that states you only have to have 1 resume.

  3. Tailor your resume to match the bullets to the job description. Mirror the needs with skills and examples that directly relate to the role.

  4. Share all versions of your professional profile with your recruiting network (e.g., headhunters). Be open to advice on formatting changes.

  5. Post your summary on your LinkedIn profile and then repost to your affiliated groups and networks.

  6. Direct message your LinkedIn 1st connections and ask for help.

  7. Reach out to 2nd LinkedIn connections and ask for introductions. Expand your network. Good people know good people.

  8. Once you have applied for a job, research any 1st – 3rd connections and network into the company.  Try to connect with people who have similar experience or the main hiring point of contact for the role. Send a personal message and ask to join their network. Separate yourself from the applicant pool. Create a first impression with a personalized introduction.

  9. Utilized your alumni networks (schools, past employers, professional affiliate groups, and associations).

  10. Reach out to friends and family, there is no one better resource to help.

  11. Attend conferences, seminars, networking events.

  12. Take all calls (relevant to your search or not)! You never know where a conversion will lead you. Now or in your future!

  13. Stay in front of your network tactfully. Do not be an afterthought, rather be top of mind.

  14. Follow up with connections after your initial effort, sometimes we forget to remind them you are still seeking a role.

  15. Go back to the basics. Draft intro emails, always send a thank you note etc. That first impression is crucial to the hiring process. The last impression is just as important.

  16. Send a video introduction, make it personal, summarize your experience, and interests for the company and who you are as a person. Humanize your application and resume.

  17. Consider CONTRACTING! Try before you buy. There is benefit for you and the company. (Note: There is often a separate budget for vendor/contracting/project workers. Full-time hires are a fixed cost and usually require a departure or add to staff due to growth. Timing in the fiscal cycle matters.)

  18. Offer help to those in need, even if you are in more need than them. Good karma always wins.

  19. Believe in the power of 10X. If you take 1 step toward your goal, push yourself to do it 10 more times that day. Your reach will go beyond your imagination.

  20. Refer to this list whenever you feel you are at a dead end. Repeat these steps over and over. Good things will come your way!
